The Truth About Exfoliation – How Much Is Too Much?
Exfoliation is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine — but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.
While exfoliating can reveal brighter, smoother, and more radiant skin, overdoing it (or using the wrong products) can lead to redness, dryness, and sensitivity.
At Distinction Beauty, Glasgow Southside, we’re here to help you understand how exfoliation really works — and how to find the perfect balance for your skin.
? What Is Exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.
As we age, our skin’s natural cell turnover slows down, causing dullness, congestion, and uneven texture.
By gently exfoliating, we encourage new, healthy skin cells to come to the surface — revealing a smoother, fresher complexion.
? The Two Types of Exfoliation
There are two main ways to exfoliate — and knowing the difference is key to protecting your skin barrier.
1️⃣ Physical Exfoliation
This involves manually buffing the skin using scrubs, brushes, or cloths.
While it can make your skin feel instantly smooth, it’s easy to overdo — especially if you’re using abrasive particles.
Too much friction can lead to microtears and inflammation, leaving your skin red and sensitised.
Our advice: Keep physical exfoliation gentle and infrequent. Avoid harsh scrubs and opt for soft cleansing cloths or professional treatments like our HydrO₂ Facial, which safely resurfaces the skin without irritation.
2️⃣ Chemical Exfoliation
Chemical exfoliants use acids or enzymes to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to shed naturally.
These include:
-
AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) – e.g., Lactic, Glycolic: Great for dryness and dullness.
-
BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) – e.g., Salicylic: Perfect for oily or acne-prone skin.
-
PHAs (Poly Hydroxy Acids) – e.g., Gluconolactone: Ideal for sensitive skin.
One of our favourites is Medik8’s Press & Glow, a gentle PHA-based toner that gives you daily glow without compromising your barrier.
⚠️ The Dangers of Over-Exfoliating
More exfoliation doesn’t mean more glow.
Overdoing it can strip away your protective barrier, causing:
-
Redness and sensitivity
-
Flaky or tight skin
-
Breakouts or inflammation
-
Stinging when applying skincare
If your skin ever feels raw or uncomfortable, it’s a sign to take a break and focus on barrier repair with ceramides, niacinamide, and calming facials like Calmwise or HydrO₂.
? How Often Should You Exfoliate?
Every skin type is different, but here’s a general guide:
